Week 09: Sense Of Place
(19/10/2021)

• Observing is an active act of inquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting.
• Senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyze, and even plan what we want to do.
• Observant and attentive to surroundings, pay attention to details and analyze them closely.
• Sense of place can be expressed- photography, collage, illustration (manual/digital), scale model and etc

Below are a few examples of a sense of place:

VISUAL RESEARCH

Sense of Place: Bedroom Miniature

As for our second project, we are to observe our surroundings- the feelings evoked, the perspective, and our own interpretation of the surroundings. Given the continual spread of COVID-19, I've been staying at home most of the time and one of the places that I've attached to is my own bedroom, as I've been spending a lot of time in my own sanctuary, I developed a 'sense of place' where a lot of things have happened in where I've been clumped up in. Hence, I decided to visualize my 'sense of place' which is my own version of my miniature bedroom. Below are a few of the inspirations that I looked up on Pinterest.

IDEA EXPLORATION

To start off, I started to brainstorm my ideas and sketch out a layout of my miniature bedroom roughly in reference of the Van Gogh bedroom painting.

Here are a few pictures of my bedroom that I've compiled in order to analyze them closely and recreate them in my bedroom miniature.

Then, to get roughly on what I intended to achieve for my miniature bedroom layout, I did an illustration on Canva by picking out the elements that resonate well with my bedroom. Hence, below are the illustration via Canva. (this is merely an illustration for my reference which could be different as shown)

As I've got a brief idea of what I intended, I then proceed on buying some stuff for my miniature bedroom as well as using a few recycled pieces of stuff that I've had in my room. The progress are as below:

I used recycle boxes as the base and structure of my bedroom.

Then, I assemble my mini bed, table, and chair using an ice cream stick and boxes.

In order, to create harmony in my miniature bedroom, the Bohemian bedroom style inspired me by having only one wall of pattern in pure white surroundings, leaving the space to breathe, meditate, and relax. And in referring to my own bedroom which was also painted in white color.  As to give contrast to the bedroom, I used grey fabric for my flooring.

Slowly progressing, I then found tiny boxes which I recycled and used for my wardrobe and book rack. As for the hanging leaves on the right side of the wall, I wanted to incorporate my actual bedroom, where I do have the artificial hanging leaves on my wall as I do adores nature and I found it aesthetically pleasing to at least have some "green" in my bedroom.

After I'm done with the bedroom structure and the furniture, I added more details to my bedroom by making and adding macrame hanging (room decor), a small table (bedside table), mini-posters, and a paperclip hanger.  Although it takes a lot of time by making tiny miniatures and adding more and more tiny details, I'm quite satisfied with the DIY details that I did as it actually gives a lot more insight on the empty square box previously, which eventually comes up as a whole and actually represents my bedroom.

Next, Study Space! Oftentimes my study space plays a large part in ensuring myself to work effectively. As my actual study place filled with mini posters and positive quotes on the wall, I incorporated my actual study section to my miniature bedroom by adding mini-posters with positive vibes and aesthetic illustration poster design.

Lighting! Even the simplest of spaces can be made cozy with the right lights. Therefore, I decided to add lights by using string/fairy lights in order to give more warmth and depth of feel to my miniature bedroom. And just a piece of extra information- according to a German Study, students were more creative under warm light, yet concentrated better under cold light. And that might be the second reason on why I added the lights.

Sustainability! As I'm using a lot of recycled boxes and stuff, I use a recycled egg carton which resembles the shape light and represents the main light in my miniature bedroom alongside the string lights hanging on the ceiling.

FINAL OUTCOME:

My own miniature 'sense of place', my bedroom.

Sense of Place Rationale: If there was only one place that I could choose to make cozy in my home, it would be my bedroom! A few may just see the bedroom as a place to crash after work/studying/partying- you fill in the blank- but to most people or me personally, the bedroom provides a private sanctuary in which to unwind, chill out and recharge after the day is through.

Design Principles Applied:

a) Harmony & Unity: create a sense of togetherness in terms of space, colors, shape, and texture
b) Contrast: the walls, flooring, and overall color of the bedroom
c) Repetition: repeated elements of the bedframe, macrame hanging, bedsheets, curtains, pillows
d) Emphasis: emphasis on the lights (center)

and that concludes Project 2!

FEEDBACK

Miniature Bedroom: Dr. Charles commented that I've added a nice collection of things to my miniature bedroom and it actually shows a very good way of analyzing the bedroom by telling the story through a 3D design model.

REFLECTION

Finally, glad to say that I've made it to Project 2! Overall, this project resonates well with me as I can tell and visualize every section of my bedroom and observe every little thing in my bedroom. As I've been doing all of the projects and assignments physically since Day 1, I've been exploring more ways to represent each artwork by using different mediums from painting to coloring, cutting & pasting (collages) to portrait weaving and making miniature. I really enjoyed the process of making them physically as this is the only module in where I can express my creative self, where oftentimes most assignments are writing-based. Truth to be told, it took me 2 straight days in completing the miniature bedroom alongside juggling other assignments on the other hand. Although I believed that I'll never reach perfection as there's always room for improvement, yet to get along the way to perfection, I'll work harder to get better results. But as for now, I'm happy with the final outcome as it is what I've expected. And special thanks to my mom, for helping me with my miniature bedroom as well as giving a few suggestions and not forget to mention, my friend for the superb video. Thanks All <3
