• Lasso tool
• Pen tool
• Layering

INSTRUCTIONS

TUTORIAL

As for our tutorial sessions, we were required to create a digital collage by using Photoshop. Hence below is the demo video on the Photoshop tools used in compositing the digital collage by Mr. Fauzi.

PRACTICAL

PROJECT 1(B): DIGITAL COLLAGE
As for the 2nd project on digital collage, Mr. Fauzi wanted us to apply what we have learned during our tutorial class by using Photoshop. Mr. Fauzi has prepared several pictures that we needed to use in order to create and come up with our own design by incorporating the pictures in our digital collage. There are about 14 pictures in total and I have chosen 9 pictures for my design. Below are the pictures that Mr. Fauzi prepared for us, and I've selected a few of them by tagging them with a purple color.

Collage Pre-Composition #1: Traingazing
Figure 1.1: Composition #1

In this piece, I basically decided to portray a train station coming from the building passing through the beautiful mountain as if the people in the train are watching from the TV where we usually gazed at the beautiful scenery from the window- be it cars, airplanes, trains, and etc. Hence, the group of people from the station are walking towards the building to hop on the train in order to witness the beautiful mountain from the train.

Collage Pre-Composition #2: Snappy Jawshua

Figure 1.3: Composition #3
Figure 1.2: Composition #2

In this piece, I wanted to portray a group of people walking towards their destination through the TV and somewhat was surprised by the presence of a man-eater (shark). Sharks are commonly derived from the famous film, Jaws directed by Steven Spielberg, therefore, I incorporated the shark elements in this piece. I decided to go with 'Snappy Jawshua' as sharks generally have large and scary-looking jaws that snap when they're swallowing their prey, the name 'Jawshua' is a play on the name of Joshua, as it incorporates the word Jaw and Joshua being one of the prey eaten by the shark in this piece. Other than that, I also added tiny little details on the lamp post to enhance a better walkway to their destination.

Collage Pre-Composition #3: Count On You

Figure 1.3: Composition #3

For this piece, I wanted to portray a sport olympian in which the fencer represents his country in fencing. Therefore, the background represents his home country perhaps? Whereas, the turquoise typewriter depicts as his podium and they were a few of people below watching and rooted over him. I also cut a few letters on the typewriter and spelled out 'fight' coming through from the clock.

FEEDBACK

Digital Collage: Mr. Fauzi commented on the composition of my collages, and he was pleased with the good series of digital collages. Nevertheless, Mr. Fauzi preferred Composition #3 the best among the other two collages.

REFLECTIONS

I found it very hard to design and create a composition that is interesting by only using a few pictures given. Nevertheless, after so many trials and errors on compositing the 3 collages, I am satisfied with the final outcome of my design. Although there might be room for improvement for the 3 compositions I designed, I really enjoyed doing the exercises so far and looking forward to explore more in future classes!
