VISUAL RESEARCH
Self-Portrait
For this self-portrait, I intend to incorporate collage elements in my artwork. Below are few inspirations that I looked up on Pinterest related to self-portrait. I liked the idea of the collage self-portraits as every piece of the elements depicts a lot of story/meaning behind the image where eventually it turns out as a whole piece that resembles ourselves from different images.
Figure 1.3: Collage Self-Portrait Inspiration
As for the 2nd inspiration, I liked the idea of the weaving self-portrait as it gives different prospects to the artwork yet still incorporating the portrait as a whole. Although it might take a lot of details in every weaving, I like how the pieces portray the artwork to different perspectives on how the audiences view them.

IDEA EXPLORATION
To start off, I started brainstorming on what I wanted to portray in my self-portrait. As a person, there are many things I enjoy but I do not want to add too much to my brainstorming session as it can complicate things and I can lose my sense of direction with this particular project. At first, I wanted to illustrate my self-portrait using Adobe Software, but then I found myself gravitating back towards the classic medium, paper, and art tools where I can express myself and explore the different mediums of the artwork.
I started off by picking a few pictures of myself to incorporate into my self-portrait. I was contemplating either to incorporate my family members' faces combined as one, which still resembles me, or pictures of my faces combined from young till now. Below are the sketches of my idea.
Figure 1.9: Combining Bits & Pieces of Myself
I decided to add a few elements that relate to my personality, interest, and a little bit more of myself. Therefore, I worked digitally on inserting a few elements. In the #1 draft, I added flowers as I do really love flowers and would definitely say I'm a flower person. I also added the butterfly, where the butterfly symbolizes that growth is a process, that we don't just wake up and become butterflies overnight. I also wanted the #1 draft to be minimalistic for not just my understanding but for whoever that views this to understand as well.
Figure 2.0: #1 Outcome on the Collage Portrait I felt that the #1 draft was pretty plain, therefore, I re-edited again and inserted a few of the cutouts elements and little texts. Below are my #2 draft.
Figure 2.1: #2 Outcome on the Collage Portrait
In this piece, I wanted to emphasize myself a little bit more and I wanted to make it colorful and harmonious rather than just plain. Hence, I added a little smiley as it represents my cheerful personality. And the placements of little texts mainly on the "dream on, little dreamer" depicts that since I was a child I tend to dream a lot even till now I do have my own dreams which I wanted to accomplish and I wanted to emphasize that every great dream begins with a dreamer and every dream is possible. As for the flowers and butterfly, I incorporate #1 draft in this piece.
Self Portrait #2: Portrait Weaving- "Details Recorded"
I stumbled upon the idea of weaving as I wanted to incorporate different perspectives of the pictures. Hence, I looked up on a video and started to sketch on my idea. Below are the progression of my portrait weaving.

Figure 2.4: Progression On Portrait Weaving
I decided to weave the portrait of myself by using a black & white portrait as I do believe that we humans are canvases- uncolored and plain until inspiration strikes us. Therefore, to represent that, I remained untouched on the colored version and decided to weave black & white on the right of my face. As a saying goes, "life is in color, but black & white is more realistic".

As for the #2 idea, I decided to give a more cheerful and colorful style in which I incorporate a few of the elements that I found relate to myself and also closely tells a bit information of me personally on what I enjoyed particularly, on my interests. Therefore, below are the progression I've been working on.
Figure 2.6: #2 Outcome on the Portrait Weaving
In this piece, I incorporated the painted elements as well as a few little words that depict my personality. Below are a few of the descriptions that represent each element that I added.

FINAL SUBMISSION
Here is the final composition of my self-portrait. As mentioned above I wanted to portray myself through bits & pieces of my pictures throughout the years that each bits & pieces represent more of myself as a person today.

FEEDBACK
Idea #1: Collage Portrait
• Dr. Charles was drawn on this idea rather than the portrait weaving (2nd idea) as it has different parts of my collages (pictures). All elements in this piece are arranged harmoniously and the placements of texts are complementary to each other. Dr. Charles also suggested submitting this piece for the final submission.
Idea #2: Portrait Weaving
• Dr. Charles commented, that this idea was cliché though it's pretty.
REFLECTION
Honestly, it doesn't take me long for this project as I've a brief idea on what I wanted to portray. However, I do keep procrastinating till the last minute and worked on it all night long to get the best results of my self-portrait. One thing I want to change on myself is probably my professional procrastinating skills, I no longer want to be professional at it. I personally do love this project so much! It reflects me on who I am as a person and what I enjoy the most when I'm myself. My individuality as a creative person, I feel, reflected throughout my work as this particular project stood out the most to me. Not gonna lie, I've learned SO SO SO much from this module and Dr. Charles himself. Each of the exercises I've done has challenged me in many different ways and has triggered my creativity and doing them manually gives me a variety of ideas to explore them. I'm very grateful for my peers, family, and Dr. Charles who constantly provide feedback. Thanks All <3
