INSTRUCTIONS

TASK
Task 3A: Type Design & Communication

Week 8 (RESEARCH, SKETCHES & PROGRESSION)
As for this week (ILW), we were required to worked on our new task in which we have to design a font. We were briefed by Mr Vinod on the task and we were asked to roughly sketch our ideas before illustrating and digitise them. In regards to start designing the font, Mr Vinod told us to follow the sequence while working on this project:

1) Research
2) Sketching
3) Identity Reference (identify existing font)
4) Deconstruction

We also have to ensure that our type design incorporate the basics of Typography:
• Ascender height
• X-height (500 x 500 pt)
• Baseline
• Descender line

AI Artboard: 1000x1000 pt

For this specific task , below are the 14 letters we will design accordingly;

a i m e p y t g d o b ! , .

Therefore, I started to research on my font design for inspiration on Pinterest and Behance before I started sketching.

Below are the references interesting typefaces I found on Pinterest. This specific typeface has its own characteristics with its tall and thin slendering lines and delicate curves. I also intend to do the square element with its very thin strokes. Below are few of the fonts that I looked up for inspiration.

Figure 1.1: Cubos Font by Rayhan

After I did a few research on typefaces that I wanted to design, I then started to sketch on my type design. Below are few sketches (sketches 1-3) that I did based on the research I've done.

Figure 1.2: Font Design Sketch (23/05/2021)

Figure 1.3: Font Design Sketch (23/05/2021)

Once I'm done with sketching, I started to deconstruct one of the typefaces from the 10 typefaces provided for us. I've chosen ITC New Baskerville Std Roman as the existing font had its contrast and closely represent the font I'm going for. Hence, we had to analyse the font by its anatomical parts. Below are the three letters I construct which are:- m,b,o.

After deconstructing and sketching process, I decided to digitalise my font. Below are the 11 letters I've worked on.

After receiving feedbacks from my previous attempt on type design,  I did a few amendments based on their feedbacks.

Week 9 (PROGRESS ON DIGITISING)
Before I proceed to FontLab, I sought feedbacks from Mr Vinod and had a consultation with Mr Vinod. Mr Vinod suggested a few designs on my type design as my previous font design structure (Figure 1.8) are quite complicated and it takes a whole lot of time. Therefore, during the consultation with Mr Vinod, Mr Vinod told me to remain the design and improvise on the structure of the font.

I started to looked up on a few typeface that closely resembles my type design on its squared and curved features, and below are few of the examples:

Figure 2.1 : Type Design Inspiration (28/05/2021)

Figure 2.2: Suggestions from Mr Vinod (28/05/2021)

Hence, I decided to redesign the structure by remaining the design. Below are the progress and my results.

Week 10 (PROGRESS ON THE AMENDMENTS & FONT LAB)
I made minor amendment based on Mr Vinod feedbacks during class, where the letter 'm' should be the same thickness one top of my typeface whereas, the letter 'y' and 'g' should be curve instead of straight and the letter 't' on the stem stroke, make it slightly shorter than the previous typeface and the '!' distance between the stem stroke and the dot. Therefore below are my final type design.

Once I've finalised my type design, I proceed to the next step of exporting the font from AI to FontLab. Before I exported them to FontLab, I begin to combine and unite the font shape to vector.

After importing the font,  I then started to adjust accordingly on the side bearings and kerning on each letters to ensure the consistency of the letters.

After that, I begin to filled in the information on my font design before I published my font design. I decided to go with the name "Ex'Act", as the typeface featured the squared and curved design as well as the thickness of each letters are exact.

FINAL PROCESS
After generating the font, Mr Vinod asked to create a poster with the phrase "i am, a type god, obey me!" as the final task for the project.

and that concludes Task 3A!

FEEDBACKS

Week 8
General Feedback: no general feedback *e-learning week*

Specific Feedback: no specific feedback *e-learning week*

Week 9:
General Feedback: Punctuations design- refers and compare to the thickness of the existing font before proceed in designing our font design.

Specific Feedback: Had consultation with Mr Vinod- and Mr Vinod suggested me to redesign my previous font design as my previous design structure are quite complicated.

Week 10:
General Feedback: Installed the typeface and create an A4 poster.

Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod commented on some minor details that I needed to amend.
• letters 'g' and 'y' on the tail makes it slightly curve.
• the distance of the '!' stem strokes and dot
• the letter 't', make it slightly shorter

REFLECTIONS

Week 8
• Experiences: As for this task,  I found out that there are so many interesting typeface on Pinterest visually appealing and I started to sketch a few designs based on the inspiration I found on Pinterest.

• Observation: A lot of work goes in designing and sketching a font as the font itself should be easily readable and visually appealing.

• Findings: I found out that sketching is easier than designing and digitising the font as it takes a lot of time and patience on digitising the font.

Week 9
• Experiences: After I'm done with digitising, I sought feedback from my peers before I asked Mr Vinod for the approval of the design font. As for the latest font design, I decided to change my design font based on Mr Vinod suggestions and my peers.

• Observation: A few of my peers commented and suggested minor adjustments on the font design and it looks great to them, however- Mr Vinod commented on my font design and suggested a few design based on my previous font design. I also seek feedbacks from seniors on my latest font design and few of them say I need to adjust some minor details on the letters.

• Findings: I came to realisation the feedback given by my peers and Mr Vinod was extremely helpful in such that it has push me to my best potential in throughout the whole process. I have mad respect towards design artist and typographers as they are able to pull a very interesting design and typeface. As for this specific task- intricate details, consistency and readability of the fonts are very important in designing and creating font.

Week 10:
• Experiences:After the final feedback before submission, I did some amendments based on Mr Vinod suggestions. I then proceed to the poster and I'm very satisfied of the outcome.

• Observation:As I was really struggling in the beginning, I finally get to learnt a lot more from typography day by day. Although it takes quite some time for me to get familiar, I'm very proud of myself that I am able to finished and understand the process of designing typeface.

• Findings:I am very thankful for Mr Vinod and Mr Sam as well as my peers who are always constantly give feedbacks on my progression in which I can improved.

Lettering & Type: Creating Letters & Designing Typefaces by Bruce Willen

Overall from this book, I learnt more through typography and fonts as well as learnt to create, explore and use the recreating the existing font or customising the letterforms. This book explains in details on the letterform analysis and further information on the dissection process of the letters. This book also provide few examples to enhance the audience understanding and gives great explanation on fonts and elements to noticed when we started designing a font.

The Anatomy of Type by Stephen Coles

As for The Anatomy of Type,  it explores 100 indispensable typefaces comes with ultimate stylistic traditional and modern typefaces along with some pointers to their identifying or noteworthy features. This book beautifully presented a delightful, colourful examples as well as visual reference, useful and interesting guide from each typeface shown in the book with its key features, anatomical details and the minor elements of type design.
