LECTURES

Week 6: Lecture & Feedback Task 2
(04/05/2021)
In this week pre-recorded lecture's video was all about screen & print.

Different medium of typography evolves from time to time. Typography was viewed as living only when it reached paper. Once publication was edited, typeset, and printed- it was all DONE through the process. Typography exists not only on paper but on a multitude of screens.

Type for Print
•  The designer's job to ensure that the text is smooth, flowing, and pleasant to read.
•  Good typeface: Caslon, Garamond, Baskerville (typefaces used for print)
^ characteristics of its font: elegant, highly readable with small font size

Type for Screen
• Typeface used on the web are optimised and often modified to enhance the credibility and performance onscreen.
^ Include taller x-height (reduced ascenders/descenders), wider letterforms, more open counters, heavier thin strokes and serifs, reduced stroke contrast, modified curves and angles.
• Hyperlink- word, phrase, image that can click on to and navigate to the document online
^ Font size typically set 12pt/16pixels on screen

Static vs Motion
• Static typography has minimal characteristics in expressing words (billboards, posters and etc)
• Motion typography offers the type for letterforms to become fluid and kinetic
• Static typography can be dynamic and expressive as well

Week 7: Feedback Discussion
(11/05/2021)
As for this week, there's no lecture, but during our class session; Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam gave us feedbacks and recommendations on our task 2. We were reminded to finish updating our E-portfolio as well as our Task 2 by this week in regards to proceeding for the next task, Task 3A. Mr. Vinod did a recap and explained to us the basics of the letterforms before we started working on our new task.

TASKS

Task 2: Typographic Exploration & Communication

Week 6
As for this task, we were required to design a 2-page editorial spread (200 x 200mm) as for our text formatting and expression. We were given 3 options for our editorial text through Facebook. In order for us to express typographically, no images and colors were allowed. However, only minor graphical elements such as; line, shades and etc. By utilizing the previous exercise we did before, we were expected to express the text appropriately.

Hence, for the three options text, I decided to choose the second text: "Be Good, Do Good, Follow the Code".

Figure 1: Be Good, Do Good, Follow the Code text

Below are a few sketches that I did roughly on paper.

Figure 1.1: Idea Sketches 1 (02/05/2021)

After I did a few sketches, I decided to choose the 1st sketches. I then started designing my headlines in Adobe Illustrator and exported them to Adobe Indesign.

Figure 1.2: First draft (02/05/2021)

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam, they commented on my headlines as it does not express the 'GOOD' word typographically. As for my formatting text, my ragging can be polished for a smoother look, there are minor orphans/widows in my text and overall the typesetting is good.

In Figure 1.2, the font family that I used are:
• Headlines: Serifa Std
• Text:Gill Sans Std (9 pt)

As my headline designs doesn't meet the requirements of Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam, I tried to express the headlines from my perspective. I did some amendments and looked up on Pinterest for inspiration.

Figure 1.3: Headline Ideas Pt 1 (11/05/2021)

Below are the 3 headline designs that I think would probably suit the layout and the design. I did amendments based on Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam feedbacks on my formatting text.

Week 7
After week 7 feedback session during class, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam commented that overall my text formatting is good. However, my headlines aren't expressive enough. Mr. Vinod suggested that I should only pick one word to express as it could emphasize and express much better rather than expressing every single word.

Hence, I did a few designs on my headlines and asked my peers for feedback. Below are the four designs that I come up with.
Figure 1.7: Headline Ideas Pt 2 (14/05/2021)

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam as well as my peers- I did some amendments to my designs. I decided to choose the 3rd design in which expresses the 'FOLLOW' words where the two 'L' represents shoes/leg.

Figure 1.8: Headline Design (14/05/2021)

I found myself struggling to express the headline designs. But with the feedbacks given by my peers as well as people surrounding me, below are the two designs that I come up with.

Design 1:
My intend was to emphasize the words "FOLLOW",  which the two L's being portrayed as shoes by following the flow. Secondly, the word "THE" below the two shoes (two L's) portrayed being stepped down by the shoes. And thirdly, the word "BE GOOD, DO GOOD", I added the contrast of the words emphasizing the designers to "BE GOOD, DO GOOD".

Figure 1.9  Editorial Task 2: Option 1 (14/05/2021)

In Figure 1.9, the font family that I used are:
• Headline: Futura, Condensed Extrabold
• Text: Gill Sans Std (9 pt)

Design 2:
As for the 2nd design, it gives a clear and strong expression on the "FOLLOW" word, in a way that the two long L's represents path/road. It also represents the minimalist and simplicity of the design.

Figure 2.0:Headline Design: Option 2 (15/05/2021)

In Figure 2.0, the font family that I used are:
• Headline: Futura, Medium
• Text: Gill Sans Std (9 pt)

Figure 2.1: Editorial Task 2: Option 2 (15/05/2021)

Hence, as for my final Task 2 submission, I decided to choose the 2nd design as below:

and that concludes Task 2 !

FEEDBACKS

Week 6
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod mentioned told us, for every assignment; it is important to include the embed PDF for the final task and make it visible, attached images such as JPEG must be clear and labeled accordingly.

Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam commented and give feedback on my task 2. Below are some of the feedback I received:
• Type setting- good
• Expression headlines- need to explore more as it doesn't express the headlines well
• Ragging- could be improved
• Slight minor on the orphans/widows

Week 7
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod told us it is important for everyone to know the typeface, point size, leading of our work, and pay attention, listened, and understand well to the feedback given by others as it might be useful for everyone

Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam commented on my headline expression and told me to work on it and express more as it doesn't express enough on the headlines.

REFLECTION

Week 6
• Experience: Eventually things get so hectic and we are already working on our Task 2.  Found myself struggling through the formatting text, but with time and the feedback from Mr. Vinod, Mr. Sam and my friends- I managed to do it. Mr. Vinod did comment on my headlines design and told me to explore more.

• Observation: Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam commented on a few of our classmates' works and I jotted down some key points on the feedbacks.

• Findings: I did look up some designs on Pinterest for the headline expression in order to make it more expressive and stand out. On a side note, I was pretty amazed at my classmates' works where they did really good work.

Week 7
• Experience: Started off with chill music as soon as we started class, I then got stressed out once Mr. Vinod mentioned the 3rd task as I still struggling with my headlines expression.

• Observation: Some of the feedback given by Mr. Vinod and Mr. Sam was quite useful to everyone, as a few of us would repeat the same mistakes and minor mistakes all over.

• Findings: I found out when it comes to designing an editorial, there are a lot of ways to do the editorial's composition in a way that I appreciate the typographers' hard work and efforts upon completing the task. Nevertheless, with constant practice, exercise as well as hard work; I will become better from time to time. Although, this task was completed in a short amount of time and there's room for improvement- I learned quite a lot through this task mainly on text formatting, layout, and headlines expression.

Virtual Typography by Matthias Hillner

This book provides good information on typographical communication. It highlights the meaning of typography and its translation of spoken word conveyed to print via a visual arrangement of words and letters. As in the context of multimedia, this arrangement is not simply a spatial positioning of text but it is also bound by temporal progression. There are many great examples and referenced used throughout this book and it is really helpful in order to understand the different elements that can be used in typography.
Thinking With Type by Ellen Lupton

Type is the definitive guide in typography specifically in visual communication, from printed pages to screens. This book focuses on how to THINK with type, in a way that this book communicate a message visually using type as an equal partner with images. This book accomplishes the goal with engaging history, clear explanations of terminology, and plenty of visual examples. Throughout the book, it also includes the latest information on style sheets for print and web- the use of ornaments and captions, lining-and non-lining numerals, the use of small caps and enlarged capitals, as well as information on captions, font licensing, mixing typefaces and hand lettering.
